Google Workspace Login Not Working

When your Google Workspace login stops working, the cause is almost always one of a handful of common issues — wrong URL, wrong account, expired password, missing 2-Step Verification, or a browser problem. The challenge is figuring out which one applies to your situation, especially when the error messages from Google are vague.

This guide walks through the most common Workspace sign-in problems by symptom, so you can diagnose and fix the issue without waiting for IT support.

Quick Diagnosis by Symptom

SymptomMost Likely Cause
“Wrong password” even though you know it is correctCached credentials, caps lock, or account suspension
Redirected to an unfamiliar login pageSSO redirect or wrong account type
“This account doesn’t exist”Typing the wrong domain or using a personal Gmail address
2-Step Verification code not arrivingSMS delay, wrong phone number, or authenticator app issue
Login works on desktop but not mobileApp version, cached token, or device management issue
“You don’t have permission” after signing inWrong account role (trying to access Admin console without admin rights)
Page loads but nothing happens / spinningBrowser cache, extension conflict, or network issue

Wrong URL, Wrong Account, or Wrong Role

These three issues account for a large percentage of Workspace sign-in problems, and they are the easiest to fix.

Wrong URL. Google Workspace has multiple sign-in entry points. For email, go to mail.google.com. For the Admin console, go to admin.google.com. For general sign-in, go to accounts.google.com.

If you are trying to access the Admin console but you are not an administrator, you will see a permissions error. That is not a login problem — it is a role problem. See our Admin console guide for details.

Wrong account. If you have both a personal Gmail account and a Workspace account, your browser may be signed into the wrong one. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner of any Google page to see which account is active.

Wrong role. If you can sign into Gmail but cannot access the Admin console, your account does not have an admin role. Contact your organization’s administrator to request admin access if you need it.

Forgot Password or Missing Verification Code

Forgotten password. On the Google sign-in page, click “Forgot password?” and follow the prompts. Google will attempt to verify your identity using your recovery email, recovery phone number, or other methods you previously configured.

If your organization’s admin has not set up self-service password reset, you may not be able to reset your own password. Contact your admin directly — they can reset your password from the Admin console.

If you are the only admin and you have lost your password with no recovery options configured, you will need to go through Google’s administrator account recovery process.

2-Step Verification code not arriving. If you use SMS-based 2SV, check that your phone has signal and that the correct number is on file. If you use Google Authenticator or another TOTP app, make sure the time on your phone is set to automatic. Time-based codes require your device clock to be accurate.

If you have lost access to all 2SV methods, contact your organization’s admin. An admin can generate backup codes for your account or temporarily disable 2SV.

Browser, Cache, and Cookie Issues

Clear your browser cache and cookies. Stale cookies or cached authentication tokens can cause sign-in loops or “session expired” errors. In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear browsing data. Select “Cookies and other site data” and “Cached images and files,” then clear the data.

Try an incognito or private window. If clearing the cache does not help, open an incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome) and attempt to sign in. If the login works in incognito but not in your regular browser, a browser extension is likely interfering.

Check for browser updates. Google Workspace is optimized for the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. If your browser is significantly out of date, some sign-in features may not work correctly.

Mobile Sign-In Issues

App version is outdated. Check for app updates in the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS). Outdated app versions may not support current authentication methods.

Cached credentials on mobile. If you recently changed your password and the mobile app is not accepting the new one, try removing your Workspace account from the device and adding it again.

Device management compliance. If your organization uses mobile device management and your device is not compliant, you may be blocked from signing in. Check with your admin about device compliance requirements.

Check Google's Status Dashboard

Before spending time troubleshooting, verify that Google’s services are actually operational. Google maintains a public Workspace Status Dashboard that shows the current status of Gmail, Admin console, Drive, Calendar, and other services. If there is an active outage, the issue is on Google’s end and will resolve when the service is restored.
