From CEO Dreams to Success
Becoming a CEO this year has been a journey filled with highs and lows, unexpected miracles, and a direct path to the life I once asked God for. It has pushed me through lessons I hadn’t anticipated, introduced me to remarkable people, and reshaped me into a more resilient and intentional leader. Over the past ten months, the wins, losses, and growth moments have been transformational. Here are the key lessons I’ve learned along the way.
Work in Your Business Before You Work on It
At the start of the year, I had the perfect plan—a transformative project with a mentor. I envisioned delivering an exceptional ROI, using the funding to address challenges and finish my book. I even called it my “Cadillac miracle.” But when I pitched the idea, my mentor said, “No.” He explained that if he invested that kind of money in marketing, he’d expect a much higher return than what I was offering.
Then he asked, “What were you planning to do with the money?” I joked, “I was hoping to work on my business instead of in it—I’m still making sandwiches.” His response was life-changing: “You need to still be making sandwiches.”
At first, this felt like a setback, but it forced me to rethink what becoming a CEO truly meant. It wasn’t just about delegation or grand plans—it was about proving my system, honing my skills, and being deeply involved in the business’s foundation. Working in my business helped me uncover inefficiencies, create faster solutions, and push through financial challenges. This hands-on approach quadrupled my revenue within six months and taught me lessons that will stick with me forever.
The Reality Check: My Team Wasn’t as Ready as I Thought
Leading a team is one of the defining aspects of being a CEO. I assigned my team major projects, only to realize they weren’t as equipped as I’d assumed. They needed more of my time, training, and oversight to deliver the quality I envisioned. While this reality was hard to face, it ultimately strengthened my leadership skills. I became more hands-on in guiding my team and focused on building their capabilities, ensuring they were better prepared for future challenges.
Learning to Fish for Success
The experience of losing out on the initial project turned into one of my greatest blessings. Instead of relying on a single major account, I developed systems for generating consistent new business and referrals. This self-reliance gave me the tools to sustain growth over time, rather than just solving a temporary problem. Becoming a CEO isn’t about quick wins—it’s about building processes that create long-term success. This shift in perspective prepared me for challenges and made my business stronger and more agile.
Results Speak Louder Than Excuses
As a CEO, I’ve learned that the only thing that matters is results. Excuses or explanations have no place when clients are expecting outcomes. If a project underperformed, it was my responsibility to pick up the ball and carry it to the finish line. This accountability-driven mindset ensured I approached every project with focus and determination. It wasn’t easy—there were sleepless nights—but delivering excellence became my non-negotiable standard.
People Are My Greatest Resource
This year reminded me that relationships are invaluable. Investing in meaningful connections with entrepreneurs in Atlanta has opened doors I never imagined. When challenges seemed insurmountable, opportunities appeared through referrals, collaborations, or unexpected meetings. These relationships provided not only financial value but also the tools, advice, and support needed to navigate tough times. Building a strong network is one of the smartest investments any CEO can make.
You’re Never Truly Alone
Leadership can feel isolating, especially when the challenges you face seem too complex for others to understand. Sharing struggles with loved ones sometimes felt like talking to a brick wall—not because they didn’t care, but because they couldn’t fully grasp the intricacies of my world. Despite this, I realized I wasn’t alone. Support came in small but meaningful ways, whether through encouragement, a new opportunity, or even just the ability to complete today’s tasks and prepare for tomorrow.
Set Higher Goals—and Go Beyond Them
At the start of the year, I set a high goal for myself—higher than anything I’d achieved before. Inspired by the “10x Rule,” I realized that reaching my goals required scaling my efforts tenfold. This mindset forced me to build better systems, work more efficiently, and rely on proven strategies from mentors and peers. The result? Tremendous growth not only for my business but for myself as a leader. Setting higher goals has become a cornerstone of my approach, pushing me to aim higher and achieve more.
The Ripple Effect of Exceptional Results
One of the most rewarding lessons this year was seeing the ripple effect of my work. My focus on delivering exceptional value led to record-breaking returns for my clients. Every one of my long-term clients achieved a minimum of $100,000 in returns, with some crossing the seven-figure mark. These results reinforced the importance of going above and beyond, not just for my business but for the success of those who trust me to deliver.
Gratitude Fuels Growth
Amid the challenges, I realized the importance of gratitude. Every obstacle overcame, every win celebrated, and every lesson learned has been part of the bigger picture. Gratitude keeps me grounded and reminds me that every step forward—no matter how small—is progress worth celebrating. This mindset keeps me focused on what truly matters and fuels my drive for the future.
The Best Is Yet to Come
Becoming a CEO has redefined my life in ways I never imagined. With more resources, a stronger team, and relentless commitment, this year has marked extraordinary achievements. We’ve delivered incredible results for our clients, expanded our reach, and completed three company acquisitions, each valued at over eight figures—a milestone that shows just how far we’ve come.
We’re stronger, faster, and more intentional. I achieved a significant accomplishment this year that I promised myself a decade ago, proving that vision combined with hard work creates a powerful force. But this is just the beginning. As I look ahead, I see more opportunities, more challenges, and more growth. The best is yet to come.
